OUR ORIGINS
Water is the source of life.
Our story begins with plankton, a microorganism at the origins of life itself.
Monaco. The fifties. Jeanine Marissal, a visionary young biochemist discovers the remarkable healing and soothing probiotic properties of plankton springing from its exceptional biological affinity with our skin. Its unique compatibility stems from the 35 nutrients that are also found in skin cells.

At Biotherm, we harness nature to heal skin from the damages caused by urban accelerated ageing. We create committed skincare for an eco-conscious generation who want effective, safe, and sustainable skincare products, capable of resetting the negative effects of urban life on their skin.

MONACO, THE FIFTIES, A WOMAN’S INTUITION
Jeanine Marissal believed in enhancing skin life natural processes and hence patented the use of thermal plankton in skincare products.
She lays the foundations of what is still the DNA of the brand: products based on natural ingredients that provide effective solutions to women’s problems while also being enjoyable to use.

A STATE-OF-THE-ART CENTER,
ROYALLY HONORED
Following the acquisition by L’Oréal, Biotherm inaugurated a cutting-edge research center and production plant in the heart of Monaco.
Her Serene Highness Princess Grace of Monaco inaugurates the brand’s new seven-storey headquarters in the principality.

1982
A WOMAN AT THE HELM
Biotherm expresses its love of Water by sponsoring French sailor, Florence Arthaud.
This photo is of Florence on the boat Biotherm II on the Route du Rhum in 1982.
8 years later she becomes the first woman to win the gruelling race.
Florence Arthaud exemplifies the history of strong women at Biotherm - she undertook her first transatlantic trip when she was just 18 years old.

THE WORLDWIDE #1 MEN'S SKINCARE
In 1985, Biotherm becomes the first beauty brand to develop a premium skincare line for men.
To date, Biotherm Homme remains the worldwide #1 brand in premium men’s skincare.

A holistic approach to beauty raising a wave of positive change.
Biotherm originates from water, and we are dedicated to preserving aquatic biodiversity, the source of life on Earth. In 2012, we launched our WaterLover program to drive our efforts in this mission, encompassing both internal practices and external partnerships. We assess all our formulas for aquatic life impact and prioritize biodegradability while pursuing fully circular plastic packaging by 2030 through eco-design and biotech. Simultaneously, we support critical scientific research through collaborations with Mission Blue's Hope Spots, Tara Océan expeditions, and a sailing program with Paul Meilhat for biodiversity data collection.
