What is personal hygiene?

Personal hygiene is the routine of keeping your body and clothes clean, and managing odors. It includes practices such as bathing or showering, handwashing, taking care of your teeth, and washing your clothes.

Benefits of maintaining good personal hygiene

Maintaining good personal hygiene is massively beneficial to your life. Here are the three main benefits it provides:

Preventing illnesses

Germs and bacteria are everywhere – it’s impossible to avoid them completely. However, it is possible to reduce their impact on your life and prevent sickness by maintaining good hygiene.

Washing your hands regularly is the first and most important step. Make sure to do so after using the bathroom, before eating, and when you come home after being in public areas.

Enhances your social life

It’s tough to be physically around someone with bad body odor or visibly poor personal hygiene. Therefore, maintaining good personal hygiene is a service to those around you. Poor hygiene can affect your self-confidence around others if you know you’re unclean or have a bad odor – or you see their negative reactions to your poor hygiene.

Improves your quality of life

Staying hygienic also improves your overall quality of life! On top of preventing illness, you’ll feel more comfortable, have healthier skin and teeth, and prevent skin and oral issues that can be painful to deal with.

Common personal hygiene practices in daily life

Keeping up with good hygiene means covering the most important areas – hands, mouth, body, and nails. Here are some tips to maintain all four areas:

Hand hygiene

As we mentioned before, keeping up with good hand hygiene is simple: just make sure to wash with soap and water for at least 30 seconds before meals, after using the bathroom, and after being in public spaces.

While you’re out, carry a hand sanitizer bottle to conveniently refresh your hands.

Oral hygiene

Neglecting oral hygiene can lead to bad breath, tooth decay, and more serious mouth-related illnesses. It’s important to keep up a consistent oral care routine to keep your teeth, gums, and mouth healthy. Here’s how:

  1. Brush your teeth twice a day for at least 2 minutes each time. Floss after every meal to prevent cavities.
  2. Use a tongue scraper to remove bacteria from your tongue and prevent bad breath.
  3. Follow up with an antibacterial mouthwash to maintain cleanliness and keep bad breath at bay throughout the day.

Bathing and skincare

Shower or bathe on a daily basis to remove sweat, dirt, and bacteria from your body. Use a refreshing shower gel, such as Eau Pure Shower Gel, or a hydrating body wash, such as Lait de Douche. Lather it across your entire body. Follow up with a body moisturizer to keep your skin feeling hydrated and comfortable.

Follow up with antiperspirant or deodorant on a daily basis to prevent sweating and bad odor.

Nails and haircare

Wash your hair with shampoo at least 2-3 times per week, scrubbing your roots to get rid of excess oils and dirt. Follow up with conditioner to soften and nourish your hair.

Keep your nails trimmed and clean, and use cuticle oil to maintain the appearance of your cuticles.

In conclusion, maintaining your personal hygiene is extremely important to live a happy and healthy life. It doesn’t need to take too much time and effort – practice maintaining small habits that add up daily. Wash your hands, bathe regularly, launder your clothes, and you’ll be off to a great start.
