PRESERVE THE OCEANS AND ITS PHYTOPLANKTON

While summer is all about enjoying our oceans, it is also a moment when we become more conscious of the importance to preserve them. Wondering how you can act in a sustainable way and take care of your skin at the same time? Here we tell you everything about phytoplankton, which produces 50% of the oxygen on earth, and how to preserve the oceans thanks to our new eco-labelled Waterlover Sun Milk !

Being closer to water also means we become more mindful about the preservation of our oceans. Water is at the heart of Biotherm. It is part of the brand’s heritage and it is where its unique ingredient Life Plankton™ originally came from.

Since the creation of its Water Lovers program in 2012, Biotherm has been fully committed to helping preserve the earth’s oceans from plastic pollution. Get ready to discover the brand’s 2020 program with its partner Tara Ocean Foundation, and how you can act to preserve phytoplankton, a key producer of the oxygen on earth and what make the ocean our planet’s blue lung!

Why is phytoplankton so essential??

Our oceans are filled with phytoplankton, microscopic organisms that produce half of the oxygen on the planet. Phytoplankton have a key role in the oxygen production cycle: they photosynthesize which means that they use sunlight and carbon dioxide to create oxygen. Even though phytoplankton represent only 1% of the global biomass, they produce 50% of the oxygen on the planet. For every breath we take, we can thank phytoplankton - these little wanderers make the ocean our blue lung.

What can I do to help preserve our oceans and phytoplankton?

Every choice counts. While moving to a more sustainable lifestyle can feel overwhelming, it is all about moving forward with small, concrete steps.

One thing you can do this summer is to look for sun care products that respect marine life. In its efforts to always improving the formula and packaging of its products to be more sustainable, this year Biotherm is taking its eco-responsible commitment one step further with its new formulation for its iconic Waterlover Sun Milk. With a 97% biodegradable base formula created with the strictest requirements on biodegradability, eco toxicity, and bioaccumulation in mind, the new Waterlover Sun Milk respects phytoplankton and marine life while giving best-in-class protection to help protect your skin from the sun’s rays.

This new formulation has gained recognition from the Nordic Swan Ecolabel, one of the world’s most demanding environmental certifications. With its 97% biodegradable base formula, eco-tested sun filters and a bottle made of recycled plastic (which is 100% recyclable), this sun care guarantees a lower impact on water and aquatic life.

How is Biotherm helping respect marine life in 2020?

Unfortunately, marine plastic pollution seriously impacts the ocean, including phytoplankton’s oxygen production cycle and the entire food chain. This is why preserving the earth’s oceans from plastic pollution is so essential.

In 2020, Biotherm is continuing its different partnerships with NGOs, such as the Tara Ocean Foundation which organizes voyages to study and understand the impact of climate change and the environmental crisis facing the world’s oceans. This year, Biotherm has created a special giftset to help finance Tara Ocean Foundation’s 2020-2021 South Atlantic mission dedicated to researching the ocean plankton ecosystem and micro plastics. For every gift set bought, 1 euro is given to the association. Furthermore, supporting Tara’s research helps Biotherm get even more invested in the preservation of marine life.
