How to combat the appearance of red stretch marks

In life, our bodies change many times: weight changes, pregnancies, aging... The skin undergoes often sudden changes, and although it is very elastic, it can develop stretch marks. When they first appear, stretch marks are red in color, but why?

Let's find out what they look like and how to treat them.

What are stretch marks?

Our skin is a very elastic organ, thanks to the presence of two proteins: elastin and collagen. Sometimes, however, these two proteins can fail (e.g. with skin aging) or the changes are so fast, they cause elastic fibers to break down, leading to the appearance of these marks.

Stretch marks are horizontal or vertical and are initially red in color (as soon as they form), then lighten over time to white.

What are the causes of stretch marks?

Stretch marks can appear on all bodies and can have different causes:

  • A sudden change in weight;
  • Pregnancy;
  • Hereditary factors and genetic predisposition;
  • Change to the body during adolescence;

The parts of the body where stretch marks appear the most are the thighs, buttocks, breasts, belly, hips and abdomen.

How to counteract the appearance of stretch marks

In order to combat stretch marks, there are a few small tricks you can try. First of all, it’s very important that the skin is perfectly moisturized. Moisturized skin is better able to withstand changes and less susceptible to the appearance of stretch marks.

Therefore it’s essential to always apply a nourishing and moisturizing cream all over the skin to boost its firmness and elasticity.

You can also try lightly exfoliating the skin to promote cell renewal: on a weekly basis, apply a scrub to the skin to remove dead skin cells.

How to treat red stretch marks

As we have seen, newly-formed stretch marks are red in color and fade over time. When they turn white, it may be more difficult to treat them, so prompt action should be taken. With red stretch marks, you can use special products such as creams and oils, which act in an intense and targeted way. These types of products make the skin more elastic and minimize the appearance of stretch marks.

It’s important, however, that the treatment be consistent: the product should be applied morning and evening and massaged across the lines until fully absorbed.

The ideal products to treat red stretch marks

In order to combat the appearance of stretch marks, the skin must be kept moisturized. Biotherm recommends Lait Corporel, a moisturizing body milk, to be applied daily. It has a triple function: it moisturizes flaky skin, restores the skin's protective barrier and protects its natural elasticity. It has a light yet enveloping texture with an enchanting delicate citrus fragrance. The product is non-greasy and non-sticky but absorbs quickly, leaving the skin fresh and perfectly moisturized.

Quick action should be taken as soon as the first red stretch marks appear. In such cases, Biotherm recommends Life Plankton Multi-Corrective Body Oil, which combats the signs of stretch marks, roughness and dry areas of the skin, restoring its elasticity. Its composition includes Life Plankton cellular water, a blend of plant oils and Tasmania Lanceolata leaf extract. After application, the skin will look firmer, smoother and more hydrated, with the appearance of stretch marks visibly reduced.
