How to treat post-shaving facial skin irritation

Male skin is often prone to irritation from beards. Irritation from shaving is very common if you do not use the razor correctly: the skin becomes stressed, itchy, and easily reddened. Therefore, you should always proceed with caution when shaving.

Here's how to avoid shaving irritation.

o Causes of beard shaving irritation

Shaving for many men is an everyday act that is often carried out automatically. But over time, the skin can become irritated if shaving is not carried out properly.

Shaving irritation is a skin irritation that can be caused by mistakes made when using a razor. It usually appears a few minutes after shaving and can lead to a rash in severe cases.

There can be several causes:

  • Dry shaving: if you don’t prepare your skin for shaving and use the right products (such as shaving foam or shaving gel) the razor does not glide well over the skin, which can lead to irritation and redness;
  • Excessive pressure: if you put too much pressure on your skin with the razor, it can become stressed and lead to redness, so it is always a good idea to glide the razor gently over the skin;
  • Excessively worn blades: attention should always be paid to the condition of the blades of your razor. If they are too worn, the razor will not glide well over the skin and multiple attempts will be needed to remove the hairs with the risk of irritating the skin.

o How to shave correctly

For many men, shaving is an indispensable ritual, but attention must always be paid to the steps involved. There are some helpful tips to follow to take care of your skin while shaving.

Here are some tips:

▪ Before shaving

To prepare your skin for shaving, rinse your face with warm water or apply a wet towel with warm water to the skin to make shaving easier. The heat will help the razor glide over the skin. Then apply shaving foam or gel to the area you are going to shave, waiting a few seconds before using the razor so that the product takes effect.

▪ During shaving

Before gliding the razor over the skin, rinse it under warm water. When shaving, always follow the direction of hair growth to avoid the possible formation of ingrown hairs. Always use gentle movements, never pressing too hard, to avoid irritation and cuts.

▪ After shaving

When shaving is complete, rinse with plenty of lukewarm water to remove all traces of product and dry your face with a soft cloth, gently patting the skin without rubbing.

Apply aftershave to dry skin.

o What products to use when shaving

For perfect skin even after shaving, you should use ad hoc products that protect the face. For this Biotherm recommends Biotherm Homme Shaving Foam, the shaving mousse designed for even the most sensitive skin, enriched with Biotherm Homme pro-comfort technology. With its gentle, foaming texture, it makes contact with the skin, leaving it soft and moisturized.

After shaving, Biotherm recommends Razor Burn Eliminator, a soothing aftershave that helps the skin recover after shaving. Its formula contains moisturizing agents and safflower oil: two ingredients that soothe and soften the skin, preventing irritation.

It should be applied after shaving and will leave the skin smoother and more supple.
