How to apply, remove and use a face mask

To give you skin a moisture boost, you can incorporate face masks into your skincare routine. There various types of face mask, depending on your skin’s needs: moisturizing, plumping or nourishing, as well as cream, gel or fabric. But how do you navigate  the world of face masks?

Let's take a look together.

The importance of face masks

Your skincare routine has many important steps for cleansing and moisturizing the skin. But in addition to removing makeup and moisturizing the face and eye area, our skin often asks us for extra help.

A face mask takes care of the skin's needs in an immediate and targeted way. If your skin looks dehydrated and dry, you can apply a moisturizing and nourishing face mask; if you need to purify you skin, you can choose a purifying mask. Each need has a corresponding face mask, which can restore the balance of your skin.

The benefits of using a face mask

During your skincare routine, you apply products that meet the needs of your skin: after cleansing and applying toner, you apply eye cream, a good moisturizer or an anti-aging cream for more mature skin.

These products provide benefits through consistent application.

But if we need an "immediate" effect, then we can use a face mask.

Here are some benefits of a face mask:

  • It’s an instant treatment due to its high concentration of active ingredients, which act quickly on the skin;
  • They are easy to apply: whatever their size, face masks are easy to use, and it only takes a few minutes to see their effects;
  • There are different types, both in terms of formats and ingredients: depending on your needs, you can find the face mask that is right for you;
  • The pampering effect: using a face mask is a wonderful moment of relaxation, just like being in a spa. Furthermore, many masks are enriched with essential oils and natural fragrances for a relaxing effect.

How to apply and remove a face mask

Whatever the type of face mask, there’s one golden rule to follow: never apply it over makeup. The first step, therefore, is to cleanse the face and remove all traces of makeup: we recommend double cleansing (an oily product plus a foaming product), with plenty of lukewarm water, followed by a toner to leave the skin perfectly cleansed.

By removing all traces of makeup, smog and dust, your skin will be more receptive to the active ingredients in the face mask.

Cream or gel mask

The cream or gel mask should be applied to cleansed skin, preferably using a brush, so that it’s evenly distributed all over the face. Another practical option is to apply it with your hands.

Be careful, however, to avoid the areas around the eyes and lips. Simply wait the specified time, then remove it with warm water. Dry your face gently with a soft cloth, preferably microfiber.

There are some cream face masks that can be left on overnight, such as Life Plankton Mask by Biotherm. This is mask has a formula enriched with Life Plankton, an active ingredient with unique properties, which makes your skin radiant and moisturized when you wake in the morning. It can be applied twice a week and gives the skin a relaxed, moisturized appearance even when you’ve just woken up.

Fabric mask

Fabric masks are single-use and disposable. The fabric is usually soaked in a formula with a high concentration of active ingredients. Fabric face masks should always be applied to cleansed skin and left on for the specified time. Unlike with a cream mask, your face will not need to be rinsed after removing the mask: the residue should be massaged in until it is completely absorbed.

Biotherm presents Aqua Glow Flash Mask, a fabric face mask with moisturizing and brightening properties. Its formula contains Life Plankton and a derivative of Vitamin C which give the skin a natural glow.

The mask will improve your dull complexion and skin irregularities, resulting in what feels like a "second skin."
