The step-by-step guide to perfect makeup removal

The skin is the first line of defense against the outside world, but also the most exposed. That’s why it’s essential to devote enough time to cleansing it before going to bed. Removing makeup from your face is not only a hygienic habit, but also a true beauty ritual to preserve the skin’s wellbeing. Are you ready to discover the secrets of a perfect cleansing routine?

o Why is it necessary to remove makeup?

Skin is our calling card, so we have to take care of it and think about its wellbeing, day after day. During the night, the skin begins its renewal process and is particularly receptive so it’s essential to choose the right night skincare products and let it breathe freely. But this can’t happen if we don’t cleanse the skin before going to sleep. During the day, the skin comes into contact with so many external factors, such as makeup, pollution, smog and dust, which if not removed can lead to the appearance of blemishes such as wrinkles, fine lines and signs of aging.

o How to remove makeup properly

In order to remove make-up and all impurities from the skin, some precise steps must be followed.

One of the key tips for removing makeup properly is to carry out double cleansing.

This involves cleansing the face with two cleansing products, one oil-based and one foaming:

  • Oil-based cleanser (often in the form of an oil) binds to the skin's sebum, attracting make-up and impurities. It does not foam and should be applied by gently massaging the face;
  • Foaming cleanser (such as micellar water or gel/mousse cleansers) activate with water, creating a foam, which is useful for deeply removing impurities.

▪ Steps for removing makeup

Once you have chosen the products you are going to apply, make sure you have cotton pads or a microfiber cloth specially designed for makeup removal.

We’re going to start with the eyes, where you may have applied waterproof, or water-resistant, makeup. Soak two cotton pads (or the cloth) with your oily cleanser and apply them to your eyes, leaving them on for about 10 seconds. Then, remove makeup residue gently, without rubbing, so as not to damage your lashes.

Then move on to your lips: this is also a delicate area to treat, because lip tints are often very resistant. Always apply a cotton pad soaked in the oily product to your lips for about ten seconds and then gently remove the residue.

Now it's time for the rest of the face: here, we can either use the pads or cloth or apply the product directly to the skin. Use the foaming cleanser and apply it to the face with a little water, making small rolling motions until you feel the skin is completely cleansed. After massaging, rinse with lukewarm water.

The final touch is a good astringent toner.

o The routine for removing makeup

Start your routine with Cera Cleanser Cream-to-Foam by Biotherm, a cream with a pleasant texture that transforms into a soft foam when massaged into the skin. This cleanser gently removes impurities, excess sebum and makeup, leaving the skin clean and fresh.

To remove makeup and impurities from the delicate eye area, try Biocils Waterproof by Biotherm. This is two-phase solution that instantly and gently removes persistent or waterproof mascara without leaving oiliness, thanks to a makeup removal system.

Use Biosource Hydrating Tonifying Toner for normal skin or Biosource Hydrating Softening Toner for dry skin, depending on your needs. These toners moisturize, tone and help restore the pH of the skin.

This facial cleansing routine will leave your skin hydrated and free of impurities. It’s important always to remember to remove makeup and cleanse your skin before applying other products such as serums and moisturizers.
