Wrinkles around the lips: how to smooth and combat them

As the years go by, your skin inevitably loses elasticity and firmness due to the decreased production of collagen and elastin. Some parts of the face may be more affected by the passing of time, such as the lip area, due to all those facial expressions you make when you eat, smile or talk. But how can you minimize wrinkles around the mouth?
Let's take a look together.

o Appearance of wrinkles around the mouth

The lip area is a very delicate zone of the face because it is affected by the facial expressions we make every day. As the years go by, the skin becomes less elastic and wrinkles may appear around the mouth.
They can be of different types:

  • "Barcode" lines, so called because they are perpendicular to the lips and parallel to each other. They often appear in individuals who smoke and are also called "smoker's wrinkles".
  • Marionette lines, forming vertically at the sides of the lips and descending downward toward the chin (strongly reminiscent of the characteristic facial features of marionettes).
  • Nasolabial folds: these are vertical lines of various depth and develop from the base of the nose to the sides of the mouth.

o The causes of wrinkles around the mouth

As we know, the appearance of wrinkles may occur at various times of life, but they are almost entirely inevitable as the years go by.
There can be several causes:

  • Poorly moisturized skin.
  • Excessive exposure to sunlight without protection.
  • Smoking.
  • Skin aging, leading to loss of skin tone and elasticity.

o How to combat wrinkles around the mouth

Here are some tips to prevent the appearance of wrinkles.
First of all, it’s always important to have a skincare routine focused on hydrating the skin and maintaining its firmness and elasticity. It’s therefore a good idea to use skincare products with ingredients such as hyaluronic acid or retinol, which is useful for cell renewal.

During your skincare routine, you can also use a jade roller - a tool that helps spread products over the face and relax the skin. Attention should also be paid to the sun's rays: excessive sun exposure, without protection, can lead to premature aging and the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, which mark the skin. Therefore, sunscreen should be used and applied to the face daily.

To minimize the appearance of wrinkles in the lip area, you can also do some facial exercises.

▪ Facial gymnastics exercises for the lips

The first exercise you can do to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and signs of aging is to smile and place your index fingers on the sides of your mouth, holding the position for 15 seconds. Then, stop smiling, keeping your index fingers on your cheekbones, for another 5 seconds. Repeat the exercise about 10 times.

Another recommended exercise is the "kissing exercise," which consists of pushing the lips out as though you are about to kiss someone, and then opening them, as though you’re screaming. Repeat the movement for a few minutes.

Finally, try placing your index finger at the center of your lips and use your lips to push your finger as far as you can. Repeat the movement about 10 times. Then, inhale air through your nose, inflate your mouth and try to blow the air out, keeping your index finger on your lips to provide resistance.

o The right product to combat wrinkles around the mouth

The main advice to combat wrinkles is without doubt to use suitable skincare. For this, Biotherm presents Blue Retinol Night Serum, the regenerative anti-wrinkle night serum.

Its formula contains Pure Retinol and the powerful regenerative Life Plankton: two ingredients that help the skin renew itself. With regular use, the skin will appear more even and radiant, with a reduction in wrinkles and signs of aging. Simply apply a few drops of serum in the evening to cleansed skin before moisturizer and massage gently.
